Political upheavals and civil unrest in the Middle East are the result of decades of corruption and suppression. The so called “Arab Spring” is not unlike the revolutions in Europe which brought down the Aristocracy and political power of the Papacy. The cry of the French Revolution; liberty, fraternity and equality may not be exactly what is driving the unrest in the Arab nations but it is similar in that the suppressed majority seek better lives. The significance of the turmoil is found in changing leadership, alliances and policy.

The Bible mentions Libya by name in Ezekiel 38:5 as a nation that allies itself with European powers which invade Israel. Realignment of Libya with Europe is a very real outcome considering Europe’s involvement in the current Libyan conflict. Of special interest is President Obama’s recent request for Russian mediation in Libya. For hundreds of years the Russians have been identified as the leader of the confederacy that invades the Middle East in the latter days. According to the prophecies, Libya is expected to be in a friendly relationship with Europe and Russia. On this basis Bible scholars expect increased Russian and European involvement in the Middle East, along with the waning of American influence.

Christadelphians view these developments as another step closer to a far greater political upheaval which triggers Divine intervention via the return of the Lord Jesus Christ to set up God’s Kingdom on earth.

It will be interesting to see how the Arab Spring will change the Middle East dynamics and create the scenario revealed in latter day Biblical Prophecies. These dramatic changes deserve attention and should heighten Christian expectations for a better world and a New Age as described in the Bible for the reader.
